Irfanview does not show print dialog

Since Windows Server 2016 does not offer a default picture image application (mspaint does not have the best user experience), IrfanView has been become very popular on a Microsoft RDS or Citrix XenApp Server.

Issue

Under rare instances, the user is not able to utilize the print dialog of IrfanView. No errormessage, no eventlog entry, nothing… the print window simply does not work for a single user, while other user on the same server do not have the issue.

With procmon I’ve been able to trace down what happens:

 

Checking the registry key value device shows, that it is empty.

 

Solution:

  1. Open Notepad
  2. select any Printer
  3. Rightclick -> Set as default

The Regkey does get a value, IrfanView  does show the print dialog again.

 

We are not sure how this is caused, our configuration on this customer is:

  • Windows Server 2016
  • Citrix XenApp VDA 7.15
  • Citrix WEM 4.4
